Object Views and Updates.

We present a mechanism for updating views in Object DataBase Systems (ODBS). Starting from an existing view data model, chronologically in line with [1, 2, 14], we extend it to provide data update ability. Updates to data views are performed in such a way that consistency with root data is preserved. The main contribution of this paper is to detail such a mechanism together with its corresponding data model. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first implementation of such a mechanism in the ODBS framework (as opposed to the RDBS framework). Since this view mechanism is ODMG 93 compliant - views are specified with OQL queries extended by operations on attributes (attribute hiding, renaming and derivation) - it may be implemented on top of various ODBSs. We discuss issues on implementation on top of the O 2 ODBS and consider related work. Various applications of updatable views conclude the article.
