Model-based Designs

V. Roshan Joseph · 2025

As we know how to approximate the response surface for given data, we will turn our attention to how to optimally collect this data. As discussed in Chapter 1 , we will use a two-stage strategy for experimental design: first an initial design and then a sequential design . In the initial design stage, we will not make any assumptions about the underlying input-output relationship, and we will try to collect the data to obtain a good approximation of the entire response surface. In the sequential design stage, we will continue the data collection process using the model estimated from the initial data in order to satisfy certain objectives of the experiment, such as optimization. We will focus on initial designs in this chapter and the next three chapters and discuss sequential designs in Chapter 7 . The case of experimental designs for noisy data will be developed later in the chapter on physical experiments.
