Visual Displays in Human-Computer Interaction
Holger Luczak, Ludger Schmidt, Olaf Oehme, Matthias Rötting · 2025
This chapter provides an overview of the evolution of visual display technology in the context of human-computer interaction (HCI). It discusses displays that use light variations, such as lamps and simple physical indicators. Moreover, it describes new technologies such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), cathode ray tubes (CRTs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), thin film transistor (TFT) displays, plasma display panels (PDPs), and virtual retinal displays (VRDs) that are known to have various advantages over their predecessors in terms of resolution, power consumption, and interaction capabilities. Finally, the chapter emphasizes the shift from output-only to interactive displays, with touch screens enabling direct interaction, particularly in tablets and mobile devices. It suggests that future developments might involve direct brain interaction, potentially replacing traditional visual displays with neural interfaces.
