Enhancing Network Security with Openssl: Cryptography for Secure Communication

Amina Imam Abubakar (Ph.D), Eseyin, Gabriel Ariyo · Iconic Research and Engineering Journals · 2025

This study explores the performance, security, and scalability of cryptographic algorithms supported by OpenSSL to enhance network security. Through comprehensive benchmarking, symmetric algorithms such as AES-GCM and ChaCha20, alongside asymmetric schemes like RSA and ECC, were evaluated for encryption/decryption speed, resource efficiency, and attack resilience. In addition, an automated key generation platform was developed to facilitate rapid, secure creation and management of cryptographic keys across various types. The findings reveal that AES and ECC provide optimal balance between speed and security, making them ideal for real-time and resource-constrained environments. The research further highlights best practices for deploying cryptographic protocols and managing keys securely. These insights are vital for organizations seeking to strengthen their cryptographic infrastructure against emerging threats and to ensure compliance with evolving security standards.
