In this study, we have developed a virtual reality (VR) tool to serve as a content delivery system for a secondary school chemistry laboratory lesson in Singapore. Our objective is to evaluate the potential of this VR tool as a blended learning alternative to traditional physical science laboratory lessons. The tool was developed to achieve a mix of home-based and in-school activities and leverage online and in-person learning approaches. The tool was trialed with 19 Secondary Three students (aged 14–15) covering topics from balancing chemical equations to visualizing chemical reactions. Our findings show that students appreciate the VR tool for providing a secure environment for conducting chemistry laboratory experiments while saving time on equipment preparation. Additionally, students strongly endorse its valuable role as a supplementary tool for enhancing the overall science laboratory experience. This article seeks to holistically outline the approach to fulfill the technological and technical capabilities and the pedagogical implementation of the VR tool. We also provided potential development of the VR tool to align with its core purpose of being a blended learning tool.
