Today the Internet has enabled the Internet of Things (loT) to become ubiquitous and has affected human life with sophisticated applications. The interaction among smart devices such as sensors, gateways, servers, and user applications in IoT will be through IoT protocols. These protocols not only enable communication between devices, but also ensure security of data being exchanged by the devices. Different IoT protocols are available, each offering specific features and capabilities and suitable for a specific IoT deployment as individual or combination. Many factors will influence the selection of IoT protocol such as power consumption, specific location, battery based operation, environment, and cost. This chapter provides a state-of-art survey on taxonomy of IoT protocols used for various purposes.
