Building a Human–AI Framework For Teaching Large Online Classes

David Stein, Shen Ba · 2022

With increasing enrollments in online learning, concerns around learner interactions, learning outcomes, and overall quality of instruction also increase. A key element in quality online instruction is instructors’ ability to create and sustain a supportive, intellectually challenging, and organized instructional environment. While providing timely communication, sustaining meaningful connections with students, and facilitating content acquisition are not new issues in teaching large classes, the online environment requires instructors who can quickly sense and react to the changing social, teaching, and cognitive needs of learners. This chapter explores recent developments in artificial intelligence as pedagogical agents in the online classroom. We introduce a human–AI framework about how pedagogical agents can serve learners in large online classes and help faculty manage social, teaching, and cognitive presence in large online classes.
