Augmented reality (AR) is increasingly recognized for its potential to drive sustainability initiatives by enhancing resource management, reducing waste, and influencing environmentally conscious consumer behavior. Despite these advantages, AR still faces numerous technological barriers that limit its broader implementation in sustainability-focused projects. This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of AR&s;s role in sustainability, beginning with its current applications in industries such as agriculture, precision livestock farming, transportation, and healthcare. The discussion then shifts to the major technological challenges—such as hardware constraints, real-time data integration, and energy consumption—that prevent AR from fully supporting sustainable practices. Furthermore, the chapter outlines a path for future research and development, focusing on improving AR&s;s technological infrastructure, embedding sustainability principles in its design, and mitigating the environmental costs of AR hardware production. This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how AR can be leveraged to support sustainability goals and overcome the current technological hurdles.
