Foundations of Intent-Based Networking

Кrzysztof Przystupa, Mykola Beshley · 2025

This chapter explores the architecture and core components of Intent-Based Networks (IBNs), emphasizing how user intents can control network behavior for greater flexibility and efficiency. The role of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in building adaptive infrastructures that meet Service Level Agreement (SLA), Enterprise License Agreement (ELA), and Quality of Service (QoS)/Quality of Experience (QoE) requirements is analyzed. A method for adaptive, customer-oriented network management is proposed, where both objective network metrics and subjective QoE assessments, aligned with user intents, are used to shape QoS. A simulation model compares traditional and intent-based management approaches, showing that the proposed method can increase service satisfaction for high-QoS users by 2–5 times. A specialized software controller for IBNs was developed, featuring modules for QoE analysis and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based decision-making. This controller improves responsiveness and minimizes human intervention, enabling real-time network reconfiguration within 10 seconds of QoS degradation.
