First Steps in Computer Vision

J. M. Bishop, Gabriel Seiberth · 2025

Vision has long been integral to the development of autonomous vehicles, as exemplified in the first autonomous intelligent car built by Sadayuki Tsugawa and his colleagues in 1977 at the University of Tsukuba&s;s Mechanical Engineering Lab in Japan; a vehicle which used two video cameras and analogue signal processing to detect street markings, and which could autonomously drive on roads at speeds of up to 30 km/h (see Section 1.4 ). [ 347 ] If machines could see and interpret the world as effectively as humans, the challenge of autonomous driving would be much easier. This is the ultimate goal of computer vision, a branch of artificial intelligence dedicated to enabling machines to analyse and interpret visual data. [ 356 ]
