Abstract This report provides an overview of the European Copyright Society's (ECS) annual conference which took place on 16 May 2025 at the University of Glasgow, hosted by the CREATe Centre, Centre for Regulation of the Creative Economy. The conference explored the theme ‘Beyond private law? The regulatory aims of copyright law’, bringing together leading copyright scholars in Europe. It provided a space for discussion on the upcoming ECS opinions on creators’ remuneration, access to information, sustainability and lawful access to copyrighted works, and facilitated debates on the topical issue of UK copyright law post-Brexit and the European Union's General Purpose AI Code. The conference recognised the crucial role of copyright in regulating digital spaces, with the rapid technological development continuing to challenge its equilibrium. The participants debated the expanding interfaces between copyright and other areas of law, and new forms of regulation, blending private and public law measures.
