Sonic Resonance
Sarah M. Robinson · 2025
From Ernst Chladni’s tones that create distinct patterns to Hans Jenny’s multi-sensory study of wave dynamics, sound shapes matter at multiple scales and registers. Spatial configurations and materialities were key to the evolution of musical styles evidenced particularly in the baroque period. The interactive causality between music and affect is studied historically and Trevarthan and Malloch’s communicative musicality highlighting the inherently musical nature of human interaction is introduced. Musical qualities such as mode, tempo, rhythm, narrativity, groove, and syncopation are illustrated with historic and contemporary architectural examples. Honing the art of listening is stressed as a crucial resource in design.
