The VHDL Design Structure

Majid Pakdel · 2025

This chapter introduces the structural foundation of VHDL, emphasizing its hierarchical and modular nature in digital design. It begins with an overview of essential VHDL keywords and syntax such as entity, architecture, library, port, generic, and signal assignments, all of which form the backbone of HDL-based design. The chapter then explores commonly used IEEE libraries and packages, including STD_LOGIC_1164, math_real, and numeric_std, which provide data types, logical operators, and arithmetic support. Finally, it explains how entities define inputs/outputs, architectures describe internal behavior, and generics enable flexible parameterization of designs. Practical examples, including the Button_LED project, demonstrate how these elements interact, providing readers with a strong foundation to build and customize complex VHDL systems.
