Dynamic interconnection limits: key principles and implementation considerations
Tanguy Hubert · IET conference proceedings. · 2025
Interconnection limits determine the allowable range of power (in kW) that distributed energy resources (DER) can import or export to the distribution grid. This range is established to prevent potential negative impacts caused by DER. Currently, most grid-connected DER are assigned static interconnection limits during the interconnection process. These limits are based on hosting capacity analysis considering worst case scenarios, an inherently conservative approach that can lead to underutilization of distribution grid capacity. However, the deployment of new monitoring and control capabilities, along with novel business arrangements such as flexible interconnection agreements, enable a more efficient approach. Dynamic interconnection limits can now be adjusted based on current and/or forecasted network conditions. This paper establishes the opportunities presented by dynamic interconnection.
