Introduction: Experience in Extended Realities

Mehmet İlker Berkman · 2025

The following chapter heavily relies on most recent studies to provide an illustration of the extended reality domain. Starting with the debates on terminology, it is aimed to inform the reader on the research methodology used in XR studies. The efforts on classifying the AR and VR technologies are also mentioned, followed by a brief history of VR and AR systems, given with a broader focus on modern day technologies. The part dedicated to methods is organized according to the concepts of user research interest, rather than the nature of the methods. Explicit and implicit methods are described for assessing usability, user, experience, technology acceptance, workload, presence and adverse effects regarding XR artifacts. Standardized questionnaires, empirical observations, physiological measures and quantitative interview methods are described and exemplified for the given areas of interests. Remarks point out several key issues in design and implementation of user experience studies regarding XR technologies.
