With the increase in the world's urban population and road vehicles, traffic congestion is an issue of concern in a very short period of time. Traffic congestion results in loss of time and fuels for the drivers; causes pollution of air and places environmental stress. The implications of this problem are particularly daunting in megacities. Here, the high concentration of traffic further aggravates these issues. This would require real time calculation of traffic density to maximize the controls of traffic signals that would improve congestion management. The project is using cameras that are mounted at the intersections whose inputs for image processing and the output from the AI component use live images. In general, an adaptive algorithm that changes the traffic light time dynamically enhances the overall throughput through the system. Emergency vehicle detection, such as an ambulance, gives priority-based traffic control to key components of our project. The system could adjust signal timing to give way to such vehicles, perhaps saving lives in critical situations and avoiding delays.
