How much can our own body be extended? In a study that split a virtual body into left and right halves, ownership of the split halves was induced and the sense of self-location was extended. In a study that allowed free manipulation of the split half of the body position, the left and right half of the body can be manipulated independently at two points. This can be applied to two tasks independently at two different locations. Thus, although it has been suggested that our abilities may be extended by splitting, it is not clear whether a space between the split bodies is also felt as our own body.It is important to clarify the range of sense of self in order to design optimum robots and avatars for human augmentation. In this study, we investigated whether body ownership is generated in the space between the split bodies using subjective ratings and behavioral measurements. As a result, body ownership is induced in the split bodies, but not in the space between the split bodies. Our results
