Impact of IBR Modeling on SCC Calculation and SCC-Constrained System Operation
Zhongda Chu, Fei Teng · 2025
Decommissioning of conventional Synchronous Generators (SGs) and integration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) have introduced significant challenges in power system operation and security. Due to the limited overcurrent capability of IBRs, it is foreseen that the Short-Circuit Current (SCC) in power systems with high IBR penetration will differ from the SG-dominated systems. Different IBR modeling approaches in terms of their SCC contribution have been proposed for the research of SCC calculation and SCC-constrained system operation. This paper aims to evaluate the impacts of the IBR modeling approaches on the system-level SCC and SCC-constrained system operation. Furthermore, key insight is provided on choosing the optimal IBR over-current capability while considering both lower and upper bounds of SCC in the system.
