Abstract This paper describes a new control method for the sheet pocket of a paper handling machine. The function of the sheet pocket is to slow down and stack flat-sheet media conveyed at high speed. To guarantee the paper stacking, the sheet pocket changes its rotational speed corresponding to the error value of intervals of papers. At high speed paper handling, standard interval value of papers becomes very short, and the necessary torque becomes large for changing rotational speed of the sheet pocket, and as a result, it becomes difficult for the sheet pocket to change its speed in response to the paper interval error to guarantee the insertion of papers to the spiral slot perfectly. Therefore it is difficult to increase paper handling speed by simple modification. In this report, we propose a new control method for the sheet pocket drive. We applied a preview control using interval values of papers measured just after feeding devices, and we can reduce the drive torque of the sheet pocket to below 1/2 that of the present drives. We developed a high speed paper handling machine that can stack 50 papers per second, using this control method.
