Hands-on dark web investigations
Akashdeep Bhardwaj · 2025
The dark web is an intentionally hidden segment of the internet that serves as a crucial source for threat intelligence and cybersecurity investigations. This chapter explores safe and effective methods for accessing and analyzing dark web content, highlighting the role of specialized browsers like TOR and tools such as Onionsearch and Hidden Wiki. Manual research on the dark web is inefficient, prompting the need for automated mechanisms to discover hidden marketplaces, forums, and illicit activities. Analysts can uncover sensitive data, such as exposed credentials, security vulnerabilities, and details of ongoing cyberattack campaigns, allowing organizations to anticipate and mitigate threats. The chapter also discusses technological challenges in Dark Web investigations, including the anonymity of its users and the complexity of extracting relevant intelligence. Methods such as VPNs, Tails OS, proxy chains, and TOR routing are covered to enhance privacy and security while conducting research. By leveraging dark web intelligence, cybersecurity professionals can gain insights into cybercriminal tactics, predict future attacks, and develop proactive security measures. The chapter concludes that integrating dark web monitoring into OSINT strategies is essential for identifying threats, tracking illicit activities, and safeguarding digital assets. Organizations and law enforcement agencies can use these insights to combat cybercrime, prevent data breaches, and reinforce their cybersecurity postures.
