Enhancement of Smart Cities Through Blockchain

Anand Polamarasetti · 2025

Growth rate of urbanization has given rise to the trend toward metropolitan centers. Technology, i.e., blockchain, has, in turn, opened up new avenues for the growth of cities. Cities require new security and data management systems for the sensitive information of the residents through blockchain that allow them to portray better privacy and security. Initially, researchers found blockchain as an effective medium for Bitcoin transactions. With such growth, blockchain reached over $230 billion in valuation in 2017. The government's disruptive technology impacts several spheres, starting with the Internet of Things, which interrupts all devices using chips, electronic commerce, auditing, electronic voting, accounting, supply chain management, taxes, telephones, health sectors, and public services. The government's application of a smart city in changing the utilization of information and communication technology, public goods, economics, public services, the environment, supply chain management, and urban planning is mainly shifting the restructuring of services into housing, healthcare, electricity, water, waste management, surveillance, and education. The development of a smart city based on blockchain technology allows for the possibility of having a hybrid network design to address some of the network and communication issues, including latency, scalability, bandwidth, security, and privacy. Developing smart city technology is one of the most creative approaches through which global cities can address their problems, including environmental degradation, resource depletion, traffic congestion, and air pollution. As regards features, blockchain technology can really help in building efficient and effective infrastructures in a smart city through decentralization, restlessness, transparency, security, and the immutability of transaction records that are possible through such technology.
