This chapter reviews the integration of blockchain with federated learning to enhance security and privacy significantly in smart city infrastructures. As it moves on to stand these urban areas as highly connected smart surroundings, there has emerged a dire need to protect sensitive data regarding user privacy that is being transmitted or processed. This really could become one of the strong solutions, because blockchain facilitates recordkeeping in an immutable manner while allowing complete transparency down to the bottom level, and federated learning provides for the ability to run decentralized machine learning without compromising data privacy. The new architecture proposed here includes a symbiosis of blockchain and federated learning for handling management and security of the data derived across the smart city. This will enable a smart city to adopt a decentralized approach given the better security of data with a wide range of privacy for individuals. Methodologically, by this chapter, the theoretical analysis is followed by simulation-based testing of the feasibility and effectiveness of the integrated approach. Key messages: The main message that can be taken from these findings is that the blockchain–federated learning model makes the common security threats negligible and highly enhances data privacy to instill more trust in the approach among the residents and stakeholders of the city. These findings have very serious implications, as they provide a scalable and efficient means for improving smart city infrastructure that perhaps will set a new benchmark for urban development projects. This chapter contributes not only to the academic discourse but provides practical insights that define the stance of a researcher during the implementation of advanced technological solutions within the smart city context area by urban planners and policymakers.
