A comparative analysis of centralized and hierarchical (cloud-edge) control strategies for the energy management of local energy communities (LECs) is conducted. Various study cases are employed to assess both local and global performance metrics, comparing hierarchical and centralized control strategies under different LEC configurations. Results indicate that increasing local flexibility through PV generation, BESS capacity, and load adaptability improves both local comfort and the optimality of hierarchical control. This study highlights how LEC configuration influences hierarchical control performance and defines its operational limits. Detailed mathematical formulations, simulation parameters, and numerical findings are presented.
