Recording Audio Data to a Memory Buffer

Guy Somberg · 2025

Typically, audio data that is mixed by audio middleware is sent to an audio device, but sometimes we need to subvert the normal flow and record into a memory buffer. This chapter goes into detail on two different methods recording audio output to a memory buffer. The first method is using an Output plugin, which attaches to the final output of the mixer. It is a simpler method, but has some restrictions. The second method is to use a DSP plugin. This mechanism is more general because it can be placed at any point in the DSP graph, but it is also more complex.
