People with speech and hearing impairments primarily rely on sign language for communication. However, most hearing individuals are unfamiliar with sign language, making daily interactions challenging for the disabled community. This issue is particularly acute in Bangladesh, where sign language is rarely used among the general population. To address this, a hand gesture-based Bangla sign language recognition system is proposed. It utilizes sensory input from flex sensors and gyroscopic accelerometers to identify Bangla signed vowels and convert them into speech. The current prototype focuses on single-handed vowel recognition due to hardware and budget constraints, with future plans to extend support to full character sets and sentence-level recognition.
