In wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes typically rely on battery power, which is limited and difficult to replace. Reducing energy consumption has become a key challenge in applications. In this paper, a new low energy sound source positioning algorithm based on data aggregation is presented to reduce the communication volume and energy consumption of wireless sensor networks. Data aggregation technology is executed at each sensor node, which collects a large amount of similar data. It only requires the transmission of a small amount of effective data, reducing the long-distance transmission of a large amount of data and saving energy consumption of nodes. Then an efficient expectation maximization (EM) algorithm is applied to complete the estimation of the sound source location. The effectiveness and accuracy of the presented sound source positioning algorithm based on the data aggregation are clearly demonstrated through extensive simulation results.
