Protecting Schools Virtually: Cybersecurity and Threats on K–12 School Computer Systems

According to an October 2024 RAND survey of a nationally representative sample of K–12 school principals, 60 percent reported that their schools experienced at least one cybersecurity incident during the 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 school years. The most common issues involved email compromises, scams, and phishing attempts, with 45 percent of schools reporting compromised business emails and 19 percent reporting compromised student emails.
