Evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Emanuel Camilleri · 2025
This chapter traces the evolution of AI from ancient times when philosophers developed logical reasoning to the initiation of the Quantum computer that will pave the way for Super AI. The early thinkers of the enlightened rational thinking era established the conceptual foundation for today’s AI. Whilst the technological development of the pre-to-WWII technology era provided the pioneering computational devises that formed the basis of the modern computer, such as the Colossus the code-breaking computer and the ENIAC the first programmable computer. However, it was the post WWII technology era that provided the exponential growth for computers to flourish, with the development of powerful computers and the acceptance of the Turing test for measuring machine intelligence. This led to further development in the areas of neural networks and AI, with machine learning algorithms for solving complex problems. The technological world is witnessing the Chatbots that are revolutionising customer care. However, with the advent of the Quantum computer, philosophical issues are being raised related to the protection of humans itself. The issue is no longer what a computer system (supported by AI) can do, but what human beings will trust these computer systems to do.
