Smart city facilities call for security to the electronic mediums, transactions, and other data. The best method for implementing security is by keeping the data in the public domain and more so at multiple locations with the concept of data distribution. Such a mechanism ensures data availability, reliability, and integrity, and is easily implemented through the new technical advancement - blockchain technology. This technology has provided the necessary support & mechanism to software or application development and spawned many applications that make a smart city a reality. This chapter introduces the concept of a smart city, transactions, blockchain technology, and the various applications where blockchain technology is used to ensure the realization of a smart city. It also discusses the advantages and the various roadblocks in implementing blockchain-enabled smart city applications. The statistical details of technology usage for the development and implementation of smart city applications are beyond the scope of this chapter.
