Artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed the English language teaching (ELT) landscape. The unprecedented rise of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), a type of AI that can generate human-like responses and outputs based on varied and complex prompts, has brought about the emergence of new knowledge, insights, policies, and practices in all areas of second language (L2) teaching, learning, and research (Chapelle 2025). Indeed, since its popularisation in 2022, GenAI has been utilised in a large number of ways: to teach various language and communication skills, differentiate instruction and assessment, customise instructional and assessment materials, provide immediate feedback on language outputs, facilitate independent professional learning and development, conceptualise research, and analyse research data (Peachey 2024). Several studies have investigated its impact in language education and confirmed that its use in teaching and learning can generally improve L2 learners’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills (Crompton et al. 2024). It can also enhance their perceptions and attitudes towards L2 learning, facilitate autonomous learning and L2 practice, provide an interactive, enjoyable, and engaging learning environment, reduce teachers’ workload, and support flexible teacher roles.
