Real-Time Hardware Architecture Design for An Innovative Bilateral Filtering Algorithm
Cong Pan · 2025
In everyday applications, filtering methods are often required for video and image processing, with bilateral filtering being one widely used technique. However, conventional bilateral filtering still struggles with edge preservation and involves computational complexity that poses challenges for hardware implementation. To address these issues, we present an innovative bilateral filtering algorithm along with a tailored hardware architecture designed for real-time high-definition image processing. At the algorithm level, edge detection is incorporated to better preserve important edge details during the filtering process. On the hardware side, the use of lookup tables (LUTs) and parallel processing strategies allows the system to achieve high-speed performance. Experimental results confirm that our approach maintains edge details effectively, and the hardware design satisfies real-time processing requirements.
