The final section of this handbook examines themes related to the material and infrastructural dimensions of digital technologies and platforms. This chapter introduces key topics woven throughout these chapters, describing elements of a materialist approach to media and technology—namely media’s capacities to modulate relations in time and space. This chapter concludes by noting that simply acknowledging this power is rarely sufficient, and suggests augmenting media materialism with the materiality of a Marxist approach to political economy may be one way to link or draw out the political implications of infrastructure.
