This paper presents the concept and the design practice process. We propose Slices-to-Shape, a new layer-based shape-simulation haptic feedback device to provide 360-degree haptic feedback to enhance immersion in virtual reality. Slices-to-Shape employs a multilayer rotatable structure, allowing the simulation of various 3D objects by controlling individual layers, known as "O-layers." Each O-layer, designed with one sharp end and one rounded end, can rotate and shift along its axis, allowing users to experience either sharpness or smoothness depending on its position. Driven by just three stepper motors, the system controls over 20 layers, with each layer offering up to 50 distinct variations, supporting a potential 1,000 shape configurations. This approach keeps the hardware simple while ensuring a wide range of detailed 3D shape simulations. We also discuss the potential value of this technology in fields such as interactive art, assistive technology, and children’s development.
