AI-powered smart eyeglasses for dyslexia: A real-time assistive reading device

Nitika Bahl, Ashish Kumar, Pranjal Kumar Singh · 2025

Reading through traditional methods proves challenging for individuals with dyslexia, a cognitive disorder that affects reading speed, word recognition, and comprehension. While tools such as text-to-speech software and audio-books offer some support, they often lack personalization and immediate adaptability. To address these limitations, this paper presents an AI-powered wearable device smart eyeglass designed to assist dyslexic users by offering real-time text detection, simplification, and auditory output. This paper outlines the architecture, system workflow, hardware components, and AI frameworks used in the prototype. It also discusses potential real-world applications in learning environments, workplace assistance, and independent reading scenarios. The AI-powered smart eyeglasses aim to improve literacy, build confidence in reading, and empower dyslexic individuals with greater autonomy. The proposed smart eyeglasses integrate Optical Character Recognition, Natural Language Processing, and Text-to-Speech technologies to read printed or digital text and convert it into easy-to-understand speech. Bone conduction speakers are embedded in the frame to deliver audio without obstructing ambient sound, while optional eye-tracking capabilities detect reading difficulties and prompt the system to repeat or define challenging words. The compact and lightweight design ensures portability and ease of use in educational, professional and everyday settings.
