Enhancing Wireless Sensor Network Reliability with a Dual Cluster Head Mechanism

Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) require extended operational life spans in limited energy settings where node replacement or recharging becomes impractical. The assessment of network longevity relies mainly on two factors: the first node failure timing and application-dependent performance indicators. The importance of clustering within WSNs became evident as a key endurance approach that lowers communication workloads and selects a central Cluster Head (CH) to organize nodes. Standard probabilistic clustering techniques generate poor CH selection results that create an imbalance between energy usage while delivering unstable connections because they lack backup capabilities. The proposed LEACH with Dual Cluster Head (LEACH-DCH) method implements a centralized clustering approach which combines LEACH protocol with fuzzy logic to elect and manage two nodes consisting of Primary Cluster Head (PCH) and Secondary Cluster Head (SCH). The implementation of dual-head management in WSNs creates a more dependable system through sustained operation while protecting against CH exhaustion failures and distributing network power equally. This proposed approach increases network sustainability while enhancing transmission efficacy and creating fundamental structures for future improvements of energy-aware WSN frameworks.
