SpiderNet and Forensics of the IoT

Mo Adda, Nancy Scheidt · 2025

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) has introduced significant hurdles for law enforcement in conducting forensic investigations. Investigators worldwide face difficulties in retrieving evidence from IoT devices due to the vast range of hardware, networks, and cloud-based systems involved. Maintaining the authenticity of digital evidence is a major concern, as it remains susceptible to cyber threats targeting data centres and large-scale server infrastructures. Addressing these challenges, along with managing the movement of forensic evidence, adds further complexity. This study explores how the SpiderNet framework, leveraging cloud computing concepts, can support law enforcement in investigating crimes involving IoT technology. A case study is presented to validate the effectiveness of this approach.
