Real-Time Hand Gesture Recognition and Distance Estimation with Webcam Integration

Garima Gupta, Priyanka Sharma, Astha Joshi · 2024

Hand Gesture Detection is an important aspect for detecting the motion of any individual. This research paper focuses on automating the gesture detection process and make it a contact less and time saving experience for the individual by developing an application that detects the hand shown of an individual and also scans the count of fingers and thumb shown on a screen. In this study, a system is implemented that accesses the webcam to detect hand movements in real-time. Researchers are creating hand gestures detection methods to enhance natural, effective, and authentic human-computer interactions without the need for extra gadgets. For the people with speech impairments, this is particularly crucial because hand gestures are their main form of communication. With multiple studies carried out and countless papers that are published each year in journals and conference proceedings, the study shows that there is a lot of activity in the field of vision-based hand gesture identification. The majority of research on vision-based hand gesture recognition systems concentrates on three main objectives: data gathering, data context and representation of hand gestures. The study demonstrates the potential of computer vision technology and value of real-time monitoring.
