Energizing Governance During Energy Transition: The Potential Role of Blockchain Technology

Rania Makni · Apple Academic Press eBooks · 2025

The severe impact of global climate change requires rapid political and social transitions toward more sustainable, resilient, and environmentally friendly energy resources. Digital transformation and sustainable development are two closely interlinked global trends that impact many aspects of global economic activities and our daily lives. In particular, digital innovations are major catalysts in the transition to sustainable, low-carbon energy systems. At the same time, energy transitions raise several governance-related challenges whose solutions remain little explored. Recent studies have shown that blockchain-based energy transition solutions offer advantages in terms of better coordination, reduced transaction costs, elimination of intermediation, improved transparency, immutability, traceability, operational efficiency, and enhanced security and privacy. Blockchain can also meet certain institutional constraints linked to the establishment of a climate of trust. This chapter explores the potential role that blockchain technology can play in addressing the governance challenges associated with decentralized, low-carbon energy transitions. It provides a comprehensive review of blockchain’s role in addressing some governance challenges associated with green energy transition projects.
