Mohd Ghazali Mohd Hamami, Zool Hilmi Ismail · 2025

Swarm Intelligence (SI) technological advancement has rapidly expanded, supported by the mass utilization of AI-based applications such as generative AI-based ChatGPT and Gemini. SI strategy has a unique characteristic of decentralized collective behavior and flexibility that is suitable for the backbone of the search algorithm in the target search problems. The target search problem usually has been linked to high demand high-risk real-world problems such as search and rescue or pollution source detection matter. The objective of this systematic literature review (SLR) is to analyze the relationship of SI strategy toward the target search problem in terms of its variants, application domain, and future undertakings, focusing on the last decade (2015-2024). The SLR was carried out based on the PRISMA Statement review method, in which 59 studies were eligible for qualitative analysis. Each SLR outcome has been presented based on the specific RQs with critical opinions, recommendations, and perfectives also being discussed. The research domain's Technological Readiness Level (TRL) has also been intuitively reasoned.
