Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is widely used for error detection in communications. As data transfer rates increase, traditional serial CRC algorithms face performance bottlenecks, making it difficult to meet high-speed transmission needs. To address this, researchers have turned to parallel CRC computation, which enhances speed and throughput by processing multiple bits simultaneously, benefiting applications like high-speed communication protocols and storage systems. This paper introduces CRC fundamentals and explains the working principles of serial CRC algorithms, including optimization strategies for variable length and bit width. However, serial methods have limitations in speed and throughput. Thus, the paper explores the evolution of parallel CRC algorithms, their applications, and a detailed comparison of their advantages and disadvantages.Despite improving efficiency, parallel CRC algorithms still face challenges in resource-constrained environments. The paper examines these challenges and discusses the trade-offs between performance and resource consumption in high-speed, large-data scenarios. Finally, it highlights the need for flexible and adaptive hardware designs and suggests future research directions.
