When it comes to effectively managing electronic health records, the healthcare industry as a whole faces numerous challenges. The primary problem is related to data security, with all patient data being stored in one place with such confidentiality risks accompanying, these systems are more susceptible to catas-trophic data losses that may cost thousands of dollars and ruin the reputation of healthcare organizations. Additionally, most patients are unable to decide who can gain access and how their sensitive health information will be used, which is more risky. Technological advancement has made rapid rise in the acceptance of digital health records which in turn increases the importance of data security. As much as the patients depend on data for treatment, they and the healthcare organizations regard data breach as a severe violation of trust in the healthcare system. To meet these concerns, it is crucial and possible to develop a decentralized, patient-centric scheme that provides data security and also security ownership to the patients. Here, the idea of the blockchain technology can provide a solution through its distributed nature and the inability to change anything entered in the blocks. The use of blockchain technology enables the storage of EHRs, protection of data from foul play, establishing a transparent, secure exchange of such data among several stakeholders, including patients, healthcare service providers, and insurance firms. Blockchains cryptographic properties prove useful in addressing the disparities that affect data security, deployment, and storage within the healthcare segment. The uniqueness of the blockchain adds value to managing data in the healthcare sector, in that it creates a secure and efficient way of controlling sensitive information. In a healthcare environment challenged by the large amounts of scattered and expensive data, distributed applications and the blockchain protocols have the potential to make the healthcare management system free from the third-party intercessors in addition to improving safety and confidentiality of the records. In addition, blockchain impacts on key areas in healthcare by providing a secure solution to long-standing security problems associated with data, thereby ensuring that the trust in health information is under the control of the patient. It is also beneficial by eliminating expensive data loss and mistake which occurred in traditional data storage as well as personal medical records and disease registries with a replaceable system that operates with central and secure foundation. As one of the most active areas of research in software development, blockchain has the potential to fundamentally transform healthcare by shifting authority over medical records to patients. This transfer of control may lead to a shift toward patient-centered care, where patients can manage their data securely and actively participate in their healthcare decisions.
