Roomba’s earliest direct ancestor was created at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab in 1989. This chapter describes how the author arrived at the Lab and came to build that first robot. Also described is the behavior-based programing paradigm that enabled robots like Roomba. The new method is contrasted with the previously prevailing, modeling-planning paradigm.
