Modernizing Legacy Systems with DevSecOps: A Case Study of Refactoring Minitwit for Secure and Scalable Deployment
Rabiatu Mohammed · 2025
The transition of legacy systems to modern architectures requires a balance between innovation and security. In the case of Minitwit, a legacy web application, the aim was to modernize its infrastructure while embedding DevSecOps principles throughout the development and deployment lifecycle. This process involved leveraging containerization with Docker, enhancing backend performance using FastAPI, and integrating comprehensive monitoring and logging with Prometheus, Grafana, and the EFK stack. A CI/CD pipeline powered by GitHub Actions and Ansible was set up to automate deployments, ensuring both efficiency and security. Key security practices, including secrets management and the implementation of HTTPS, were woven into every phase to safeguard data and applications. The outcome is a resilient, scalable system capable of handling high traffic with a robust security framework, demonstrating the potential of DevSecOps in transforming legacy applications into modern, secure solutions.
