Designing energy-efficient cryptographic modules for securing real-time data communication in embedded Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
International Research Journal of Modernization in Engineering Technology and Science · 2025
The rapid proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed industries by enabling real-time data acquisition, processing, and communication across vast networks of interconnected embedded devices. However, this growth presents significant challenges in maintaining both energy efficiency and robust security, as these devices often operate under stringent resource constraints, including limited battery capacity, processing power, and memory.Traditional cryptographic approaches, while providing strong protection against cyber threats, are frequently unsuitable for embedded IoT systems due to their high computational overhead and power consumption. This paper addresses the critical need for designing energy-efficient cryptographic modules tailored specifically for securing real-time communication in embedded IoT devices. From a broader perspective, it reviews the evolving security landscape, energy-optimization strategies, and the unique trade-offs between performance, security, and resource utilization.Narrowing the focus, it presents architectural design considerations for lightweight cryptographic algorithms such as Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), block ciphers like PRESENT, and stream ciphers optimized for hardware implementation.Furthermore, the study proposes integration strategies that leverage adaptive key management, hardware acceleration, and dynamic power-scaling techniques to maintain security without compromising device longevity or communication latency. The paper also highlights the importance of hardware-software co-design, where tailored instruction sets and optimized firmware enhance both cryptographic performance and energy efficiency. Finally, real-world case studies and simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approaches, showing measurable gains in energy savings alongside maintained or improved security levels. This work contributes to advancing secure and sustainable IoT deployment, supporting applications ranging from industrial automation to critical infrastructure monitoring, where energy efficiency and data confidentiality are equally paramount.
