An Exhaustive Review on Energy Efficient Lightweight Cryptography Solutions for Privacy and Security in Edge Computing
Ankita Agarwal, Shish Ahmad · 2025
Energy-efficient lightweight cryptography techniques are crucial in the field of edge computing for protecting data on devices with limited resources, like wireless sensor networks and Internet of Things devices. These algorithms are perfect for contexts with constrained processor power, memory, and energy availability such as industrial automation, smart cities, smart grid systems, smart healthcare and driverless cars since they are developed to minimize resource usage while maintaining strong security. As edge computing environment is distributed, heterogeneous, and close to Internet of Things devices, it provides additional security, privacy and integrity of data challenges. The paper addresses various security challenges and issues in edge computing along with the list of suggested methods available for addressing them in the literature. While addressing these challenges and recommended methods various lightweight cryptographic algorithms based on their computational cost and communication overhead is taken into consideration.
