Generative AI in India
Debayan Gupta · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2025
Abstract Understanding the impact and potential of Generative AI in the context of a heavily heterogeneous and complex developing country such as India requires an understanding of the technologies, socio-cultural influences, and economic realities at play. The combination of a burgeoning and technically adept middle class, high-quality digital infrastructure, and rising investments means that India is in an excellent position to take advantage of Generative AI technologies—if properly regulated. As a developing country with many large, marginalized populations, any negative impacts will likely be most keenly felt by those who can least afford it. As such, technical and regulatory efforts are underway across government, academia, and industry to ensure that this revolution yields value for all and does not just become another pathway to further inequality.
