AI applications in language learning: improving speaking fluency and pronunciation using chatbots and speech feedback
Wenyan Cui, Jing Zhang · Interactive Learning Environments · 2025
The purpose of this study was to investigate how well AI-driven solutions, particularly conversational chatbots and pronunciation training applications, can assist language learners in improving their speaking skills and pronunciation. The study spanned 12 weeks and involved 60 students from two Chinese universities: the School of Foreign Languages of Jiaying University and Hanshan Normal University. The control group relied on conventional instructor feedback and peer practice. The experimental group practiced and received feedback on their pronunciation and conversational abilities using AI technologies. According to the results, the experimental group considerably improved all abilities evaluated, with a mean increase of 10 points in speaking fluency, grammar, and vocabulary and 15 points in phonetic accuracy. Student satisfaction surveys revealed a considerable preference for AI technologies, particularly in terms of accessibility and perceived usefulness. The study holds important implications for modern language education. By employing AI-powered technology, such as conversational chatbots and pronunciation evaluation software, language learning schools could provide students with personalized, interactive learning experiences that promote engagement and speaking proficiency beyond what traditional methods can achieve.
