Due to Industry 4.0 advancements, the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is now a commonly used network for inter-vehicular communication to obtain data regarding vehicle location, speed, traffic congestion, and road conditions. This data was taken from a publicly accessible network that is vulnerable to numerous threats. As a result, data security plays a critical role in data exchange. Despite the existence of several authentication protocols, the majority of them are unfortunately vulnerable to well-known attacks. Furthermore, the current protocols are incompatible with resource-constrained VANET applications due to their high computation and communication costs. This paper introduces a lightweight and privacy-preserving authentication system for VANETs, offering a secure and efficient method for transmitting data over public channels. The proposed protocol is compared with similar existing protocols and is proven to be both secure and lightweight. It achieves lower computational and communication costs than state-of-the-art protocols. As a result, the proposed system is a more practical, reliable, and efficient solution for secure data transmission in VANETs, as supported by the evaluation results.
