Ontology-based Testing Revisited

Tobias Kulmburg, Franz Wotawa · 2025

Identifying critical issues before deployment is essential to increase safety and decrease the risks of systems. Especially, in the context of safety-critical systems, like autonomous driving, we need to find critical interactions between the system and its environment during testing. In this paper, we focus on ontologies capturing the system’s environment for generating test cases. We rely on previous work but improve the algorithm, allowing us to introduce further knowledge into the ontologies. In particular, we show how constraints on attributes can be handled. Besides this, we illustrate the approach using a case study and further present the outcome of a first experimental evaluation considering different ontologies. Furthermore, we outline challenges and open research issues to further improve the ontology-based testing approach.
