Blockchain-enabled edge intelligence for IoT

Gauri Shankar, Md Raihan Uddin, Shareeful Islam · 2025

Integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) and Edge Computing (EC) is changing how data are collected, analysed, and used. However, the rapid increase in IoT devices has introduced challenges such as latency, scalability, data security, and user privacy. Integrating Edge Intelligence (EI) in the EC helps address these challenges by enabling data processing intelligently on the edge devices. Because of this, EI has received significant attention in the adoption of IoT systems. However, EI also poses some specific challenges to the IoT system. Such challenges are related to resource constraints, scalability of the EI, security vulnerabilities, secure data management, high power consumption, and complex data compliance. To address these challenges, integrating the blockchain in the EI for the IoT promises data security, decentralised data management, data integrity, privacy to the users, computation power optimisation, and reduced vulnerability on edge devices. This chapter provides a detailed explanation of EI in the IoT, its limitations, and how Blockchain-enabled EI addresses those specific issues in the IoT. Additionally, we discussed the key challenges in IoT caused by integrating blockchain and EI, along with the scope of future research.
